Hi Jason. Sorry to hear that people are profiting off of your work without your permission sad

My fiance is a business litigation attorney and he, like others in this thread, strongly recommends that you speak to a lawyer. Specifically, one that specializes in international copyright and trademark law.

He also mentioned that its usually in a client's best interest to not discuss cases involving potential damages publically.

An ideal first step would be to call your local BAR association. International copyright and trademark law is sort of a boutique practice, so if there isn't one in your area, you can ask for a list of intellectual property (IP) attornies who might be able to help.

Hang in there! We're rooting for you smile

Oh, cool. I've seen a couple of Prof. Sapolsky's lectures for school. He's very entertaining.

I like that Stanford makes these available for free.

Thanks for the link

People became super paranoid on griefers and it is annoying sometimes

Personally, I really love seeing people roleplay in my villages. It's fun and it adds to the immersion. If people are getting cursed while roleplaying, it might be their character choices.

For example...

Good Roleplay Idea:

An aging man in his late forties. He's short-tempered and often mean to the children in his settlement. You see, he saw his kid sister die to a snake bite when he was just a teenager. He begged for help while the poison slowly took her life, but no one came to her aid with antivenom. Since then, he's vowed to keep kiddos at a distance. Life is hard and children are the most vulnerable.  He never wants to feel that horrible grief again...

Bad Roleplay Idea:

A 14-year-old edgelord whose favorite word is "p*ssy".

Same for threshed wheat.  A grain silo would be nice.

Absolutely.

There are primitive grain silos in Africa that would fit well with OHOL's aesthetic. Basically, raised adobe cylindrical structures with woven reed roofs.

Some things at the top of my wishlist include...

Pork Pies/Goose Pot Pies

I've noticed that towns aren't bothering to domesticate boar and geese lately. Allowing pork and geese to be used in pies might help incentivize more diversity animal husbandry.

Seed Pouches

Seed clutter is everywhere and it makes me sad. I was thinking that water pouches could be converted into seed pouches (with a bit of thread or rope) and used to hold somewhere around 10 seeds of the same variety.

Buff to the Curse System

I actually think the curse system is a very creative way to manage griefers. Because the black speech threshold is so high, however, it doesn't seem very effective at the moment.

Pretty sure you can just make a fire and burn the seeds as he spawns them.

True, but this style of griefing has become extremely popular as of late.

If this game turns into "Jason Rohrer's Seed Burning Simulator 2018", I think it's fair to say that players will mosey on over to greener pastures, lol.

You guys curse him?

The curse system wasn't very effective here.

Because there were two griefers working simultaneously, a few cursed Tom White while others used their tokens on Lorenzo White for killing their daughters.

I'm sure he didn't die with anywhere near the curses needed for black speech in his next life.

Here are some screenshots of his antics:

As Cat described, Tom White sealed himself in a stone room with pies and used a teleporter to shoot milkweed seeds across the village. When the milkweed plant despawned, he planted a new one and started the process over again. Meanwhile, his friend (Lorenzo White) murdered all the females in the town.

The lag experienced is game-breaking. I really suggest a nerf to milkweed.

I'm into it. Let's cook.

I get that, my dood. But I'm still in favor of fixing little exploits that have game-breaking ramifications on a settlement.

Reduce the number of milkweed seeds or allow them to quickly decay when placed on the ground.

there was a baby teleporter. She made a milkweed plant in the middle and used the teleporter to spread hundreds of seeds while not moving, so her griefing was really more efficient.

I have also recently experienced this style of griefing in another small town.

Dear OHOL Gods,

Please nerf the mighty milkweed seed, for the fruiting milkweed are too fruitful.

Amen.

I completely agree with the comments in this thread. It's certainly worth $20.

If you're a fan of the survival-style genre, you'll definitely enjoy this game. That said, OHOL is very unique, so research and practice are a must. You'll need to do your homework, read the forums for guides, hone your skills, and ask questions to master how to play.

Yes, there are occasional bugs, but as other players have stated, Jason works hard to resolve them as quickly as possible. I've been playing for a few months now, and I've really enjoyed watching this game develop.

EDIT:

Also! I think Jason saw/read Ready Player One this past Spring, so he ends all his update emails with, "Thanks. Thanks for playing my game".

It's just so adorbs I can't even stand it.

It's completely possible I picked up the second knife in the fray shortly after you died. There was a murder down south and, shortly after, someone had a bow. Kinda chaotic. I kept the knives safe and started that wheat farm while murdering and judgment commenced, lol.

You were a good trapper, gwt. It was nice of you to actively try and pass on your trade before dying.

#17 Re: Main Forum » Kid was stealing clothes right off of me! » 2018-07-25 01:50:24

I saw this happen. Yes, OP was an elder at the time.

I was asking him about a wheat farm and a kid came up and replaced his gold crown with her rabbit fur hat. After she swapped her sheepskin for his jacket, he chased after her and died. I was able to grab his backpack (which contained two knives) from his grave.

That town was buck wild.

#19 Re: Main Forum » people really need to relax geez » 2018-07-23 22:11:05

I can understand why new players might be compelled to build a bow and become a village hunter. In many survival-style games, hunted animals can be looted for meat, and that meat can be easily cooked and consumed as food.

In OHOL, however, many animals aren't edible. Those that are edible require at least some tech and knowledge to cook and consume. Even a simple bunny dinner is tricky! I've watched so many hungry newbies burn their bunny fillets over open fires. Poor guys.

What new players may not understand too is the PTSD suffered by veteran players, lol. I've been murdered dozens of times for being a female of child-bearing age, for being the "wrong" color, or just for fun. The longer you play, they warier you become of out-of-place behavior and weapons.

#20 Re: Main Forum » people really need to relax geez » 2018-07-22 21:57:49

I actually witnessed the matriarch of the village question OP regarding missing steel tools and the fact that she was making a bow.

OP responded by repeatedly saying, "F*ck You!" to the matriarch.

Because OP was building a bow and screaming "F*ck You!", I think the matriarch was wise to label her a griefer and take the steps she thought necessary to keep the tiny eve camp safe.

Lesson: if someone asks if you're a griefer, maybe don't answer with belligerent swearing, lol.

Ahh, okay. You "evolved" an oven. Mystery solved.

To reiterate, I'd like to see more villages with kitchen stations set up far away from the smithy. It would also be cool to see more dedicated pottery kilns away from the smithy too.

There never seem to be enough bowls and, every time I've spent a life as a smithy, my crucible bowls have been nabbed for farming or pie making, lol. Potter is a profession that is sometimes dearly needed in young villages but scarcely seen. It's a good thing to think about when little babies ask their mom "what - do?"

In our little village, I recall seeing two deep wells and a large artic biome to the east. No, I don't remember a lot of desert tiles or ponds. I'm sure it was founded for it's proximity to the green space to the south.

#22 Re: Main Forum » Steve family » 2018-07-10 23:53:10

Aww, hey Phoebe. I was your mom.

I think, yes, there were lots of new players. Also, someone kept making the oven into a kiln. Might be simple ignorance or a new griefer tactic ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Though, there's something to be said for building kitchens far away from the smith station...

I was sorry to see the little village fall apart like that. Thanks for working as hard as you did, Pheobs. Mom luvs you <3
